The variator is a hydromechanical system with electronic control. The mechanical part is two pulleys, each of which is formed by a pair of movable conical discs. The driving pair receives torque from the engine, the driven pair transmits it further to the wheels. The pulleys are connected by a wedge-shaped chain (belt).

This type of transmission is called infinitely variable, and for good reason. So, there are no gears as such in this device: the electronic "brain" of the control computer monitors the operating mode of the engine and a number of sensors, and according to this information changes the position of the pulleys, choosing the current optimal gear ratio.

Causes of variators’ failure

As a more traditional automated hydromechanical transmission, the CVT suffers from aggressive driving. Such style of driving leads to working fluid overheating, excessive friction in the system or, conversely, its reduction and belt slippage.

The variator is related to the "automatic" and sensitivity to the quality of the fluid circulating through the hydraulic system. Moreover, the requirements of the variator for it are extremely strict: you can use only the one recommended by the manufacturer.

What breaks in the variator

A multilayer wedge-shaped chain, comprising hundreds of fairly thin plates, is the most vulnerable part of the structure. Damage to one of such segments, or their connection, gradually involves neighboring elements, and the defect increases. Chain replacement is a complicated process, but it is quite feasible for a competent specialist.

Also, a considerable percentage of defects accounts for bearings’ wear.

Electronics can also fail, and it is usually corrected by replacing the entire variator controller.

"Minor" breakdowns can include clogging of filters (usually they are changed together with the fluid), jamming of the oil pump valve and other malfunctions that do not require dismantling and disassembly of the entire unit.

Repair or a change?

Prolonged ignoring of violations in the operation of the variator box leads to such serious problems as jamming, destruction of a few, but expensive parts of it. Considering the total cost of removal, disassembly, repair, adjustment and installation of the unit, it is economically more profitable to replace it with a used variator (prices for new automatic transmissions of this type are also very high). Less costly operations, such as bearing replacement, are less wasteful.
